Lawyer’s ill health stalls Fani-Kayode’s trial

The trial of a former Minister of Aviation, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, was stalled yesterday due to the absence of his lawyer, Mr Ahmed Raji (SAN).

Fani-Kayode was arraigned on five charges for allegedly diverting N26 million from the then National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), under the guise of payment for a contract. The ex-minister allegedly received the money from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) while he was the Director of Media and Publicity in the campaign organisation of former President Goodluck Jonathan. When the matter was called for hearing yesterday, lawyer to the first defendant, Abubakar Usman, told the court that he would not be able to cross-examine the witness because his lead counsel was ill.

He said: “My Lord, may we humbly ask for an adjournment to cross-examine the witness because the lead counsel to the first defendant, Mr Raji, took ill and has travelled abroad for proper treatment.”Prosecution counsel, Mr Johnson Ojobane, did not oppose the application for an adjournment. But he prayed the court to fix a date in July before goping on vacation for the cross-examination of the witness.Justice John Tsoho adjourned till July 7 for cross-examination of the witness and continuation of trial.Source: The Nation
