Isikilu Akinsanya, the Oyo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has cautioned officers against the misuse of firearms in order to check cases of accidental discharge.
Akinsanya spoke on Monday during the 2020 International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO) Day celebration held at the command’s headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ICDO Day is an annual event observed by civil defence organisations across the world with the objective of contributing to the development of member states.
The theme of the celebration is “Civil Defence as a First Aider in Every Home.”
The NSCDC commandant said that the corps would deal with any officer found guilty of misuse of firearms.
He said that one of the cardinal objectives of the corps was to protect lives and properties.
“In fact, there is nothing like accidental discharge because there are procedures and processes to be taken before releasing ammunition.
“We don’t tolerate it and we will not take it lightly with whoever did it because we take lives very sacred in NSCDC.
“Members of NSCDC arms squad are trained by the Nigerian Army, police and various agencies and we go for regular training at the command’s training colleges,”Akinsanya said.
The commandant said the corps also educates and regularly cautions its personnel before going for any operation.
Akinsanya further warned those in the habit of taking pictures whenever accidents occur to shun the habit and rather assist the victims.
In his lecture, Assistant Commandant Ezekiel Akingbade said NSCDC personnel, being the first aider, must always provide appropriate first aid treatment to accident victims.
Akingbade said many accident victims died because they did not receive first aid at the appropriate time.
