Adetunji Akinyemi is a true son of Agege. He knows the area intimately, having grown up in the Sango slum amidst the Hausa community. His childhood home was a lively environment, with a bustling market in the backyard and the constant hum of commerce on the main road out front. Adetunji’s education was disrupted by a public school strike, forcing him to switch to a private school where he repeated a grade. Despite this setback, he excelled and became the senior student.
Adetunji’s hard work extended beyond academics. He sold bottled water (pure water) to help his family and was a natural leader. He organized drama groups at church and in the community, entertaining people and mentoring younger children. His exceptional character made him a role model for many in his neighborhood.
Agege has been Adetunji’s home for over 37 years. He completed his education, including a master’s degree, and started his adult life there. He married, built a house in the Arigbanla area, and established his law practice on Capitol Road after initially working with a prominent local lawyer on DopemuRoad. Adetunji’s dedication to Agege attracted other lawyers to the area, expanding the legal profession there. He actively campaigned for Agege to become a branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, reflecting his commitment to the community.
Adetunji is known and respected by everyone in Agege, from the elite to the ordinary people. He is a “lawyer of the people” – approachable and dedicated. His presence has been instrumental in attracting companies to Agege, with several of his clients establishing businesses there. He even serves as a silent director in some of these companies.
Adetunji’s generosity is legendary, especially during the pandemic. He provided thousands of food packages and hand sanitizer to those in need. He continues to give back to his community, making significant donations at the end of each year and on his birthday.
Adetunji’s influence on the development of Orile Agege, both directly and indirectly, is undeniable. This is all the more remarkable considering he has never held public office. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he has been bestowed with the title of Baamofin Orile Agege.
