COVID-19: Technology is going to play a critical part in the practice of Law – Prof. Pat Utomi

During the virtual Interactive Session titled Excelling despite Covid-19: The new normal hosted by Charles Ajiboye,FICMC and organized by The Penthouse Law, Professor Pat Utomi being the Speaker at the session shed light into the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Legal Practice.

Prof. Pat Utomi is of the opinion that the Legal Profession has to be ready to embrace Technology in the practice of law. He said that before the present pandemic, software developers and lawyers in the United States were working on making the conventional practice of law obsolete by developing Artificial Intelligence that would render legal solutions in place of real human lawyers. He however added that creativity is what would make lawyers stand out when that Artificial Intelligence is finally operational in our jurisdiction

He also added “lawyers are going to need to spend far less time in court rooms that are crowded where a judge goes from a page to another.  We should be able to utilize technology to make things so easy such that with one or few buttons, all the references or documents pertaining to a case would be easily accessible”

While encouraging lawyers to keep safe and work virtually, he stated that Nigeria is going to unfortunately see a significant spike in the next couple of weeks due to the decision to ease the lockdown He also warned that what is happening in Kano might be a small insight into what is going to happen.

After the influenza pandemic in San Francisco, it was so severe that for four years, many people were scared of attending public events.

Prof acknowledged that the impact of COVID-19 which has led many to work from home is the beginning of the change the world would see. He added that Technology is going to play a very critical part in the practice of law as it would no longer be business as usual. He also added that there would no longer be need to spend long hours in the office as we usually do before the pandemic.
