My distinguished Colleagues, it is with great delight that I join you all today, 12 June 2020, in celebrating the restoration of democracy and civilian rule in Nigeria. Universally, democracy is regarded as the best form of government because it promotes the will of the people and encourages public participation in governance. Democracy is synonymous with good governance. Democracy promotes and protects the rule of law and human rights, which is the bedrock upon which our Association, the NBA, was established.
Undisputedly, democracy in Nigeria was not just achieved on a silver platter, but after a stern struggle and suffering. Therefore, as we celebrate democracy today, let us remember and celebrate all those who sacrificed, bled and lost their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. It is our collective and individual responsibility to support, promote and sustain democracy in Nigeria. Indeed, the NBA has a duty to advance the tenets of democracy in Nigeria, and ensure that true democracy is practiced in Nigeria. NBA must at all times condemn impunity and executive lawlessness, breach of human rights, assault on the judiciary or any other act which undermines the practice of good governance and the rule of law in Nigeria.
We must remain steadfast in protecting and promoting the rule of law and democracy. We should not leave the fate of our Country in the hands of our leaders alone, as it is our collective responsibilities to make Nigeria greater.
As a lawyer cum citizen of this great Nation, today, I reaffirm my commitment to promote and protect democracy, good governance, rule of law and human rights. I wish you all a happy Democracy Day celebrations and Holiday Day.
I believe in Nigeria, I believe in you.
