A Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has discharged and acquitted former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode of a 12-count charge related to the procurement of a fabricated medical report and the use of false documents.
Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe dismissed the charges, ruling that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) lacked the constitutional authority to try Fani-Kayode on these particular allegations. The court determined that the case did not fall under economic crimes and that the evidence and witnesses presented failed to establish his involvement.
The EFCC had accused Fani-Kayode of arranging for Dr. Ogieva Oziegbe to issue a fake medical report, which he allegedly submitted in an ongoing trial for money laundering before the Federal High Court. The anti-graft agency also claimed that the former minister conspired with Oziegbe to create a document titled “Medical Report on Olufemi Fani-Kayode,” purportedly from Kubwa General Hospital.
However, Fani-Kayode denied all charges, and the court’s ruling cleared him of any wrongdoing in this matter.
