Warmest congratulations to the newest members of the largest Bar in Africa! Your dedication, perseverance, and commitment have culminated in this momentous occasion. Today, you take the first step in serving our nation as barristers and solicitors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a moment of immense pride and joy for you, your families, and the entire legal community.
I especially recognise the 850 exceptional students who participated in our Pre-Bar Tutorials and Mock Exams and are now members of the Agile Legal Professional Mentorship Scheme. Your outstanding performance, marked by numerous first-class honours, has set the bar high. This achievement is a testament to your hard work and a promising start to your legal journey.
As you embark on this new journey, remember that you are now part of a noble profession that demands the highest level of professionalism, integrity, and ethics. This is a call to Service. You have a responsibility to uphold the rule of law, respect the Bench, be relentless in your pursuit of justice and continually upskill yourself by participating in Bar activities and taking the mandatory continuing legal education seriously.
As I said on my visit to your Law school campuses, in today’s rapidly evolving legal landscape, success demands more than just legal expertise. While technical and cognitive abilities remain crucial, the 21st-century lawyer must also possess exceptional emotional and social intelligence (EQ/SQ). In an age of information overload and automation, EQ/SQ sets you apart. Hone your self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management skills. Remember, high emotional intelligence allows you to understand yourself and others, build strong relationships, navigate complex situations, and excel in a collaborative environment.
I have unwavering faith in your ability to excel and make the Bar proud. As you take your first steps in this exciting journey, know you are not alone. I and the Agile Legal Professional Mentorship Scheme team are here to support and guide you every step of the way. Embrace the endless possibilities, seize opportunities, and leave a lasting impact on our nation.
Once again, welcome to the legal profession. I wish you all the best as you begin this exciting new journey.
