Governor Siminialaya Fubara today ordered bulldozers to demolish the Rivers House of Assembly complex, 24 hours after 27 members of the house switched political allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
The demolition also comes a day after a high court recognised Edison Ehie, an ally of Fubara, as speaker of the House, though he commands a minority of seven members of the house of 32 members.
A portion of the complex was gutted by fire late in October, at the outset of the political crisis between Governor Fubara and his godfather, former governor Nyesom Wike, who is now FCT Minister in Abuja.
Ten bulldozers arrived at about 5 a.m. to the complex on Moscow Road, Old GRA in Port Harcourt, with the demolition beginning at about 7 a.m.
The house was built by the Peter Odili administration which ran the state from 1999 till 2007.
“Not a single thing was salvaged in the building”, said a reporter who witnessed the demolition.
According to reports, the Fubara government, in justifying the demolition, said it wants to “renovate” the assembly.
