How doctor slumped, died in church after working 72 hours shift at LUTH

Dr. Umoh Michael, working with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has slumped and died in the church after he was said to have worked 72 hours shift at the hospital.

Michael had on returning from LUTH on Sunday after the three days shift and went to his church, United Evangelical Church, where he slumped and died.

Angry resident doctors at LUTH have written to the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, to lodge a serious complain.

In the letter, the Association of Resident Doctors, LUTH chapter, said the house officers were in deep grief over the loss of their colleague, a co-house officer, Michael, who died on 17th September 2023, after having a 72 hours call in the Neurosurgery Unit.

They stated that Michael was said to have been on call 72 hours before arriving home on Sunday morning to get set for church service, reaching his worship centre, where he slumped in the church at about 11 am.

According to the resident doctors, Michael’s roommate attested to the fact that he had barely slept in their apartment over the past one week as he was always on call and that the day he returned home was around 3 a.m. after surgeries and other activities in the Neurosurgery Unit.

But Omolola Fakeye, Public Relations Officer, LUTH,  said it was not true that anybody worked for 72 hours, saying he had not been briefed about his death.

Fakeye said he and others were at a programme on Monday, but that he would find out, adding that he could not say anything now.
