Legal Nigeria

Joyce Oduah, FICMC Commiserates with the Families of Sir Alfred Ehobamien, SAN and Sir, Jadegoke Adebonajo Badejo, SAN

Yesterday, Friday, 05 June 2020, I received the devastating news of the demise of two(2) eminent and very revered members of the legal profession – Sir Alfred Ehobamien, SAN who died on 04 June 2020, and Sir Jadegoke Adebonajo Badejo, SAN, who died yesterday, 05 June 2020. I am deeply distraught by the news of the demise of these distinguished members of our Association, who until their death, were epitome of hope and inspiration to many within and outside the legal profession.

Incidentally, Sir Jadegoke Badejo SAN was a mentor and a family friend. I met him for the first time when I had my first job interview with him in 1992 at General Oil Limited, where he was the external solicitor. My daughter also did her law internship at his law firm, where she was well tutored.

Indeed, the exit of these distinguished legal luminaries has robbed not just the legal profession but the nation, of some of the finest and brightest minds that we have. This is an irreplaceable loss not just to their families but also to the NBA and Nigeria as a nation.

It is very disheartening that this loss comes at such a crucial time when influential and treasured voices need to be heard in the promotion and protection of the rule of law, democracy, good governance, Nigerian unity, and respect for the fundamental rights of our people. Indeed, the Learned Silks were formidable forces to reckon with. They epitomized diligence, tenacity, integrity and humility.

I therefore join my colleagues in mourning these legal icons. May their gentle souls rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with their immediate and extended families in this trying times.
