Again, we wake up to hear about the devastating news of the brutal rape and murder of a young and promising Nigerian, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, who was just 22 years old. As reported, Uwa, who was a 100 level student of the University of Benin, had visited the Redeemed Christian Church of God (“RCCG”), the Edo Province 10, located at Ikpoba Hill, Benin on Wednesday, 27 May 2020, to read. There, she was brutally raped and killed by the assailants who afterwards struck her head with a fire extinguisher.
As a Nigerian cum lawyer, I condemn this hideous act perpetrated by these men, and call on our law enforcement agencies, particularly the Edo State Police Command, to expeditiously commence investigations and ensure that the perpetrators of this horrendous act are brought to justice.
Indeed, no Nigerian deserves to have his or her life terminated like this. We enjoy inalienable rights which are protected by the Constitution including the rights to life and dignity of human person. Every life is sacrosanct and is protected by our laws; therefore, Uwa’s slayers must not be allowed to escape the consequences of their actions. Such action is condemnable and should not be condoned by any person, society or agency.
I should add that it is very worrisome that cases of rape and murder of our children, teenagers and youths are increasing rapidly. Just recently, the nation was rattled by the news of the gross defilement of a 12 year old girl by 11 men. Fortunately these men were swiftly arrested and prosecuted. I therefore implore the Edo State Police to swing into action immediately so as to achieve justice for Uwa.
May the gentle soul of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa rest in peace and may her slayers be brought to justice.
