A tragic confrontation in Lagos State has resulted in the death of Inspector Saka Ganiyu, who was killed by a soldier on Wednesday while performing his duty to enforce traffic regulations.
The incident occurred in the Ojo area of Lagos when Ganiyu attempted to stop a motorist who was driving against traffic, only to discover that the driver was a soldier from the Nigerian Army.
According to a statement from SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Inspector Ganiyu was killed during the altercation as he sought to uphold the law and maintain order on the roads.
Hundeyin confirmed that the incident took place when Ganiyu flagged down the motorist, who subsequently identified himself as a member of the military.
The situation escalated quickly, resulting in the officer’s untimely death.
“Inspector Saka Ganiyu, killed in the line of duty by @HQNigerianArmy soldier on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 for attempting to stop a motorist (who later turned out to be a soldier) driving against traffic in the Ojo area of Lagos State,” Hundeyin wrote on his X handle.
The police command has expressed its condolences to Ganiyu’s family and colleagues and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
The Lagos State Police Command is also in communication with military authorities to address the matter appropriately.
As the community mourns the loss of a dedicated officer, there are growing calls for accountability and enhanced collaboration between law enforcement agencies to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
