NBA Ikeja Branch Participates in Lagos Assembly Public Hearing on Local Government Reform Bill

In a proactive step to reshape local governance, the Lagos State House of Assembly convened a public hearing on October 24, 2024, to gather input on the proposed Local Government Administration Bill. The bill, formally titled “A Law to Provide for Local Governments’ System, Establishment and Administration and to Consolidate All Laws on Local Government Administration and for Connected Purposes,” aims to streamline and consolidate laws affecting local government functions in Lagos.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja Branch, despite receiving the invitation on short notice, ensured representation at the hearing. Leading the delegation were the Branch Chairman, Secretary, Publicity Secretary, and notable bar leaders. Although the branch could not make a formal presentation due to time constraints, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Muiz Banire, delivered a compelling address on behalf of Lagosians that resonated with attendees.

Significantly, the House extended an open invitation to the public, allowing written comments and input on the bill for the next seven days. In response, the NBA Ikeja Branch Executive Committee has pledged to collaborate with its Law Reform Committee to submit a comprehensive response. The branch will update its members as soon as the committee completes its review of this crucial legislation, underscoring the importance of public involvement in shaping local governance in Lagos.
