Promasidor Limited has reportedly received a cease and desist letter from the NBA, while the status of International Breweries Plc’s response is unconfirmed. The NBA cited Sections 22(1) and (5) of the Legal Practitioner’s Act 2004, emphasizing that the appointments contradict the act’s provisions.
The Lagos and Ikeja branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) are determined to take action against companies that appoint non-lawyers as legal directors. This information was gathered by Legal Nigeria. The NBA reportedly sent letters to several affected companies, including Promasidor Limited and International Breweries Plc, which allegedly hired polytechnic graduates for legal director roles.
The body firmly demands that both companies promptly cease employing non-lawyers in legal director roles. Failure to comply within the stipulated 14-day period will result in the NBA pursuing legal actions against the companies, further underscoring the gravity of the situation.
The NBA also urged the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) to examine the situation, utilizing their members in roles as human resources officers across various organizations.
