The Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) said the nation’s economic survival lies with non-oil products.
Mr Bello Noma, the NEPC Trade Promotion Advisor, stated this when he led his colleagues on a sensitization visit.
Noma said that the oil, “which is the nation’s main export,” would one day dry up, leaving the country with non-oil products.
“In addition, several years ago, more than 200 nations signed an agreement to phase out the use of fossil fuels.”
“This also includes the crude oil we are bragging about, so by the time this is adopted, there will be no market for us.
“So if we don’t diversify our economy and embrace the non-oil sector, there is going to be a problem. That’s why we are now advocating and sensitising the public to the importance of the nation’s huge non-oil potential”.
He further stated that Nigeria is blessed with abundant non-oil resources in each state of the federation, but they are not fully harnessed.
The trade promotion advisor said that the council had dedicated a week to creating awareness of the nation’s rich non-oil potential to boost the export of non-oil products.
“Come and tap the untapped potential, and it will create a lot of job opportunities for our youth and women and also generate more foreign exchange for the country.
“Now, when you look at the macroeconomic indicators in the country, you have reason to worry. The macro-economic variables are because there is no sufficient forex inflow into the country”.
