The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Bayero University, Kano has directed its members to join the nationwide strike action declared by the Nigerian Labour congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC)on 13th November, 2023.
The institution had earlier announced the suspension of academic activities including the ongoing 2022/2023 First Semester Undergraduate examinations and all other academic activities until further notice.
A statement signed by the union secretary, Comrade Kabiru Haruna Isa noted that the union members in the institution are directed to withdraw their services and should not participate in activities as well as supervision of the examinations.
The statement reads in part; “The Union, as an affiliate of NLC, calls on its members to join the nationwide strike action declared by the NLC on 13th November, 2023.
“Therefore, our members are directed to withdraw their services and should not participate in departmental board, faculty board, Senate, Council and committee meetings as well as supervision of the examinations,” the statement added.
The National Executive Council meeting of the labour unions, held on November 13, 2023, in Abuja, resolved to embark on the strike.
The development was a result of the alleged failure of the Federal Government to address issues affecting workers, such as the minimum wage, insecurity, corruption, and poor governance.
Also, unions had made some demands, which the government had allegedly failed to address following the recent crisis in Imo that resulted in the alleged brutalisation of the NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, and other members of the labour unions.
