The Plateau State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Jos, has upheld the election of Caleb Mutfwang, representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the Governor of Plateau State.
In its ruling, the tribunal dismissed the petition filed by Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The tribunal held that the PDP held valid congress in the state.
The tribunal also held that the issue of nomination and sponsorship of a candidate is a solely pre-election matter.
Prior to this decision, the tribunal had already dismissed a petition filed by Alfred Dabwan, the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), against Governor Mutfwang.
Dabwan had approached the tribunal, seeking the nullification of the poll on the grounds of the alleged exclusion of his party’s logo from the ballot by INEC.
Caleb Mutfwang was officially declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after securing 525,299 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Yiltwatda, who garnered 481,370 votes during the March 18 election.
According to the results, the PDP won in 10 local government areas (LGAs), including Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Lantang North, Langtang South, Riyom, Mikang, Mangu, Jos East, Qua’an Pan and Bokkos.
