Trump sentenced in hush money scandal, but escapes jail

0

By Kazeem Ugbodaga

Judge Juan Merchan has sentenced President-elect Donald Trump, to an unconditional discharge in the high-profile hush money case, sparing him jail time, penalties, or probation.

Judge Merchan justified the decision, stating, “The only lawful sentence that permits entry of a judgment or conviction without encroaching upon the highest office of the land is an unconditional discharge.”

In an unexpected and poignant conclusion, Merchan addressed Trump directly: “Sir, I wish you godspeed as you assume your second term in office.”

Despite the courtroom’s tension, Trump remained stoic, offering no immediate reaction. However, outside the confines of the court, his response was fiery and defiant.

Taking to Truth Social, Trump unleashed a scathing critique of the proceedings, branding the case “another pathetic, un-American Witch Hunt” orchestrated by “Radical Democrats.”

“There was never a case,” he declared emphatically.

“The real Jury, the American People, have spoken, by re-electing me with an overwhelming MANDATE in one of the most consequential Elections in History,” he said.

Trump’s statement also

targeted the legal process, describing it as a “despicable charade” and promising a vigorous appeal to “restore the trust of Americans in our once-great System of Justice.”

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was subdued but intense. CNN reporter Kara Scannell, who observed the proceedings, noted that this trial differed from others due to the rare opportunity for the public to hear directly from Judge Merchan.

Throughout the trial, Merchan maintained an “even keel” despite Trump’s repeated attacks, which included inflammatory statements about the judge and his family.

Today’s sentencing marked a culmination of that judicial composure, as Merchan directly addressed Trump via a screen, his tone measured yet firm.

“The legal protections of the presidency do not reduce the seriousness of the crime or justify its commission in any way,” Merchan said. “One power they do not provide is the power to erase a jury verdict.”

Mike Okiro Honors Court Order, Withdraws from Ohanaeze Presidency Race

0

Former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, has officially withdrawn from the race to become the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, citing a recent court order issued by an Enugu State High Court. The order, which bars him from contesting the election scheduled for January 10, 2025, stems from a challenge to his indigene status.

In a statement issued during a briefing in Enugu on Thursday night, Okiro expressed his disappointment over the court’s decision, which he believes was made without giving him a chance to defend himself. He argued that the ruling, which claims he is not an indigene of the area, contradicts numerous verifiable facts, including his birth attestation from the National Population Commission, confirmation from his traditional ruler, and his extensive records of involvement with various Igbo and South-South organizations.

“Unfortunately, the court did not invite me or hear from me before issuing this injunction,” Okiro lamented. “However, I respect the rule of law and will abide by the court’s order, as I have always believed in the importance of democracy and justice.”

Despite his frustration, Okiro reiterated his commitment to upholding the law, stating that his decision to withdraw is in accordance with the legal process. “My obedience to court orders, even when they seem unfavorable, reflects my dedication to democracy and the rule of law,” he added.

He also expressed his ongoing support for the ideals of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, pledging to continue advocating for unity, progress, and peace in Igbo land. “Although this setback is unfortunate, I believe justice will prevail, and our collective principles of Igbo unity and progress will guide us through this challenge,” Okiro affirmed.

Okiro thanked his supporters, particularly the Igbo-speaking people of Rivers State and the wider Igbo community, for their unwavering backing. He also acknowledged the strong support of Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, for his candidacy and leadership.

The former police chief assured his followers that the legal dispute would be pursued to its conclusion, hoping that the case would be resolved fairly in line with the country’s constitution.

NBA Adjusts Stamp Cost Fees Due To Economic Pressures on Production

0

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has ratified resolutions aimed at addressing ongoing challenges in the production and distribution of stamps. These resolutions, initially discussed during a meeting between the National Executive Committee and Branch Chairmen and Secretaries on September 9, 2024, were formally approved by the NBA-NEC on November 7, 2024.

Henry Barnabas Ehi, the Assistant General Secretary of the NBA, stated that providing free stamps and seals to members is no longer feasible due to the prevailing economic realities. He also highlighted that the previous cost of Four Thousand Naira (N4,000) for a pack of four sheets, which had been in place since 2015, is unsustainable.

As a result, the NBA has introduced new pricing for stamps and seals:

  • Two Thousand Naira (N2,000) per sheet (24 stamps)
  • Four Thousand Naira (N4,000) for two sheets (48 stamps)
  • Seven Thousand Naira (N7,000) per pack (4 sheets) (96 stamps)

Production of the stamps and seals has already begun, with members who have made payments set to receive email notifications once their stamps are delivered to their respective branches.

In the NBA-NEC communiqué, further details on these resolutions were shared, and the NBA expressed its appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of its members. The association remains focused on creating a sustainable and efficient system for stamp production and distribution.

JUST IN: Fresh hearing into Kano Emirate dispute ordered by Appeal Court

0

A fresh hearing into the legal battle over the Kano Emirate tussle involving Alhaji Ado Bayero and Muhammadu Sanusi has been ordered by the Appeal Court in Abuja.

Delivering judgment on Friday, the court held that Sanusi was denied a fair hearing due to the shoddy manner in which a Kano High Court conducted proceedings against him.

While delivering the lead judgment, Justice Mohammed Mustapha said the Kano High Court was unfair to Sanusi as it conducted proceedings without serving him a hearing notice to enable him to present his case.

Mustapha stated that all courts of law are bound to ensure justice for all parties by giving them equal opportunities.

He called the conduct of the proceedings against Sanusi a travesty of justice.

The Appellate Court further held that Sanusi should have been served with a notice to air his grievances before judgment was delivered against him, describing it as a shoddy arrangement.

It subsequently ordered that the case be remitted to the Chief Judge of the Kano State High Court to be reassigned to another judge for expeditious determination.
