Business Operators Urge LASG To Beef Up Security In Ikorodu

0

Some business operators and residents in Ikorodu area of Lagos on Friday urged the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force to secure investments in the area by beefing up security.
The business operators and residents told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the business environment was prone to risks following the attacks on four banks in the town.
According to them, increasing security in the town will boost economic activities due to the volume of daily financial transactions by companies in the area.
NAN recalls that recent robbery attacks on some old generation banks in the area have caused panic and disrupted business activities within the town.
The aftermath of the attack was customers disenchantment with using the banks due to to overcrowded banking halls and poor services from the ATMs.
Mrs Elizabeth Johnson, the Chief Executive of Better World Ltd., appealed to the government to safeguard lives and investments in Ikorodu.
“If banks that are guarded could be robbed in daylight, then business operators that do not have access to security are more vulnerable to attacks.
“Losses to robbery attacks will deter the economic growth of the state and undermine the business confidence.”
Mr Babatunde Lambo, a businessman, said that continuous attacks on banks in the area could lead to relocation of banks from the area.
“Banks in some towns in some states have stopped operating due to constant attacks on their branches; we do not want such to happen in Ikorodu.
“Before, we were advocating that banks should increase their branches and ATM locations in the town to serve the teeming customers, but with the recent happenings, I doubt if that will be possible.
“We need the government to quickly resolve security issues in the town because existence of banks is vital for smooth business activities.”
Mrs Rosemary Iloba, a supermarket operator at Ewu Elepe, Ikorodu, said that since the closure of the banks at Ijede due to armed robbery attacks, financial transactions in the area had become stressful.
“We all have to make the journey to Ikorodu before we can make transactions which is highly inconvenient because of the distance and overcrowded banking halls.
“We urge the government and police to collaborate on ensuring security and continuous development of economic activities in the state,” she said.

49 year-old gynaecologist commits suicide in Enugu

0

THE 49 year-old Chief Consultant Gynaecologist and Managing Director of Hope Medical Centre Benin City, Dr John Abode, who was found dead in his wardrobe last Tuesday, may have actually committed suicide, Vanguard gathered.
Vanguard learned from a top security source that the deceased who was said to have attempted suicide on several occasions, but was stopped by the widow, injected himself with a yet-to-be disclosed substance before heading to his wardrobe where he hanged himself with his belt.
It was learned that the day the sad incident occurred, the wife attended a church service where she later called their 10-year-old son to inform the father that she wanted to speak with him.
The source told Vanguard:  “It was at that point that the boy searched the house and discovered the deceased body in the wardrobe.”
It was learned  that the deceased’s wife rushed down to their residence and it was in an attempt to see if she could revive the husband that she moved the body out of the wardrobe.
Vanguard was further informed that from investigations, the wife had earlier informed the deceased’s family about the attempted suicide in the past by their son, which made the widow to be deeply involved in church activities to intercede for the husband in prayers.
It was further gathered that though the deceased, who also is a staff of the Stella Obasanjo Women and Children Hospital in Benin City, was a successful gynaecologist, his alleged occasional erratic behaviour at home had been a source of great concern to the wife, who had always counselled him against his urge to commit suicide.
Though the deceased’s family is suspecting foul play, autopsy results so far indicated that the deceased died as a result of cessation, mostly caused by suicide. However, the family of the deceased called for another autopsy which is being conducted in Lagos

I will deny my husband sex until he pays his debt — wife (in court)

0
A 39-year-old trader, Mrs Modinat Idowu, told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos state on Thursday that she would continue to deny her husband, one Akeem Idowu, sex until he has paid the debt he is owing her.
Idowu said this while responding to a suit filed by her 45-year-old husband whom he had been married to for 12 years.
“I have been denying my husband sex because he borrowed N690,000 from me and has refused to pay, I will continue to starve him of sex until he pays the money,’’ the mother of two said.
“Akeem is in the habit of swearing and cursing me with a charm called `Ishan egungun’: a specially prepared masquerade’s rod and this is affecting my life.’’
She, however, urged the court not to grant her husband’s wish for the dissolution of their marriage, saying that she was still in love with him.
The petitioner: Akeem, a businessman, had asked the court to dissolve the 12-year-old marriage over alleged sex denial by his wife.
“My wife does not want me to touch her nor make love to her, I am tired of the marriage because I am neither a stick nor a stone,’’ he said.

Akeem alleged that his wife loved attending social activities and hardly stayed at home.

Whenever she went out, she would not return home until after five days or seven days, he said.
“My wife will go from one party to another; spending days and neglecting the family.
“I have reported her severally to her father who always calls her to order but there has been no positive change,’’ Akeem told the court.
He described Modinat as a liar, not trustworthy and always inconsistent in her words and actions.
“Modinat lies a lot. One day, she told me that she was going to Mushin in Lagos state; but some hours later, someone called to tell me that she was in Igbo-Ora in Oyo state.
“When I called her and confronted her that she was in Oyo state as against Mushin she claimed she was going to when she left home, she cut her cell phone line.
“She took permission on another day that she was going to Oshodi, but someone saw her at Ijebu-Ode in Ogun, I cannot just account for her movement.’’ Akeem said.
He pleaded with the court to dissolve the union since he was no longer interested and did not love her any more.
The President of the court, Mr Hakeem Oyekan, adjourned the case to July 22 for further hearing

Sule Lamido (ex Gov. of Jigawa) : “You mean i am now a prisoner?” Nigerians make funny judgemental comments on twitter

0
A Federal High Court, sitting in Kano, yesterday, ordered former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, and his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, accused of fraud, remanded in prison custody in Kano till September 28.
The former governor is facing a 28-count charge alongside his two sons, and one Wada Abubakar in connection with alleged corruption and money laundering that amounted to over N1.35 billion.
Lamido who was arraigned for receiving N1.35 billion kickback from a government contractor was shocked and could not believe his ears after the judge turned down his bail application and ordered him remanded.
Immediately the court rose and the Deputy Chief Registrar of Federal High Court, Mr Solomon Akpedah ushered the former governor and his two sons into a waiting van for a journey to Kano central prison, Lamido exclaimed saying: “You mean I am now a prisoner”? The Deputy Chief Registrar, however, tried to calm him down saying “No sir, you are not a prisoner”.
The alleged fraud money was allegedly paid into accounts controlled by the governor and his sons.

INVESTIGATION: Bayelsa Governor allegedly hires world’s most ruthless hackers for N100M to hack computers, phones in Nigeria

0
The Bayelsa state government paid close to one hundred million naira to an Italian firm, Hacking Team, to hack computers and phones in Nigeria, new information emerging from the firm’s leaked internal data has shown.
Hacking Team, notorious for equipping governments with tools to hack citizens’ computers and phones, was itself hacked Sunday night and 415 gigabyte of internal data leaked to the public.
Researchers have been pouring through the leaked documents since it was first leaked Sunday night, throwing up many shocking details of the firm’s secret dealings with Bayelsa state and other repressive governments, including Sudan, Russia, and Bahrain.
Documents seen shows that the Bayelsa government, a small state in Nigeria’s oil rich Niger Delta, paid Hacking Team N98 million to carry out internet attacks, in what appears to be the most ambitious hacking project by a Nigerian state government.
The contract was signed in late 2013, Hacking Team’s internal documents, leaked after the Sunday night hack attack on the company, show.
Details of the extent of the attacks Hacking Team carried out on behalf of the state is not clear at the moment.

The contract with the Bayelsa government is classified as “intelligence ” – the same class with contracts the firm unlawfully held with Russia and Sudan.
The cost of Bayelsa government’s contract with the firm is equivalent to what the Russian government recently paid the firm for maintenance of its Remote Control System. And worth more than what Turkey, Columbia and Bahrain paid to the firm.
Hacking Team, now learning how it feels to have one’s privacy breached, is notorious for developing intrusive softwares for state clients who use them to hack citizen’s computers and smartphones. Hacking Team’s twitter account was hacked and used to announce the hack.
The firm claims its intrusion softwares – Remote Control Systems – are the most invasive and ruthless, with ability to compromise most operating systems, except iOS – but including jail-broken iOS.
In one video commercial, it boasted that its software could hack offline and encrypted computers and smartphones, even if the target was outside the government’s “monitoring domain”.
Hacking Team’s Remote Control Systems are more dangerous and intrusive than the WISE technology the Nigerian government bought from Israeli company, Elbit in 2013.
While WISE depended on transmitted data such as voice calls, social media postings, and number plates, Hacking Team specialized in software that had full capabilities to hack, compromise your gadget and silently steal stored data like SMS, Whatsapp messages, call records, and photos.
Galileo, one of the company’s most evil softwares, is also able to secretly take snapshots and record conversations of its victims.
Hacking Team is loathed by digital activists and freedom of expression advocates all over the world for helping oppressive regimes abuses citizens’ right to privacy and freedom of speech.
Reporters Without Borders listed the firm on its Enemies of the Internet index due to its primary surveillance tool, Da Vinci.
Few weeks ago, co-founder David Vincenzetti joked in emails about how bad a leak would be for Hacking Team. In one of the leaked internal emails, he described the firm’s product as the “evilest” technology ever developed on earth.
The hacking software is originally designed as a country-wide attack tool.
The intentions of the Bayelsa state government in purchasing the software is unclear at this time.
As at the time the Bayelsa state government acquired the software, the state was not known to be under any external cyber aggression.
But it’s governor, Seriake Dickson, was persecuting a citizen over critical Facebook comments.
It was also in the run-up to the 2015 general elections.
During the same period, PREMIUM TIMES and few other Nigerian news organisations believed to be critical of the former regime, led by Goodluck Jonathan, suffered several cyber attacks.
Mr. Jonathan is from Bayelsa state and enjoyed absolute loyalty from Mr. Dickson at the time.
Hacking Team did not sell its software directly to the Bayelsa state government. The transaction was channeled through an Israeli company, NICE, and then V&V Nigeria.
V&V, also Israeli-owned, is known to have close relationship with former Bayelsa state governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.
V&V is responsible for the supply of many government hacking tools in Nigeria. PREMIUM TIMES had earlier this year exclusively reported how V&V won a N6 billion contract, back in 2010, for a N6 billion strategic GSM Tracking System for the Nigeria Police Force and expansion/upgrade of the existing system with Nigeria’s secret police, the State Security Service.
The Bayelsa Governor could not be reached to comment for this story.
His spokesperson, Daniel Iworiso-Markson did not answer or return calls seeking comment. He is also yet to respond to a text message sent to him. And so also is Dan Kikile, the state commissioner for information.

Nigerian court sentences Pakistani to prison for importing heroin

0
A 19-year-old Pakistani, Iftikhar Arslan, was on Thursday sentenced to 18 months in prison by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court, Lagos, for importing 25. 4kg of heroin.
Arslan, who said he was a medical student in Pakistan, pleaded guilty to the charge preferred against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The convict however pleaded for leniency, claiming that he did not know how the hard drug got into his bag.
“I am a medical student from Pakistan and I truly do not know how the substance entered into my bag.
“I beg this court to have mercy on me.
“My education and career will suffer and be destroyed.
“I don’t have anybody here in Nigeria because my people are in Pakistan,” Arslan said.
In his ruling, Aneke sentenced the convict without any option of fine.
He said that Arslan’s conviction and sentencing was in accordance with the provisions of Sections 281 and 285 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
“This sentence will take effect from the day of his arrest.
“And I also order that the imported hard drug should be destroyed 30 days after this ruling if no appeal is lodged,’’ the judge said.

Earlier, NDLEA Prosecutor, Fingere Dinneys, said the convict was arrested by some NDLEA operatives on April 5, 2014, during the inward clearance of a Qatar Airways flight from Doha.

The prosecutor said the convict was arrested at the E-Arrival Hall of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.
He said the convict imported 25. 4kg of heroine without lawful authority.
He said that the convict confessed to the crime during interrogation in his statement before the NDLEA officials.
He told the court that the substance found on the convict proved to be hard drugs when it was tested at an NDLEA forensic laboratory.
The prosecutor told the court that the offence contravened Section 11 (a) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004.

EFCC fails to arraign Sylva on fresh charges

0
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] yesterday failed in its bid to arraign former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva on a fresh 50-count corruption charges instituted against him before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sylva is being charged alongside three others, including Francis Okokuro, Gbenga Balogun and Samuel Ogbuku for allegedly using three companies, Marlin Maritime Limited, Eat Catering Services Limited, and Haloween-Blue Construction and Logistics Limited to steal N19.2 billion from the state government during his administration.
The fraud, according to the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), allegedly occurred between 2009 and 2012, under the pretence that they were being used to augment salaries of the government workers.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed of another Federal High Court had earlier dismissed one of two fraud cases instituted by the anti-graft agency against Sylva on the grounds that it was an abuse of court process.
Also, on June 1, 2015, Justice Evoh Chukwu, also of the Federal High Court, Abuja, struck out the other case against Sylva following the application filed by the Ministry of Justice to withdraw it.
When the matter came up yesterday before Justice Ademola Adeniyi, Sylva’s legal team anchored by Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) asked the court to quash the charges on the grounds that they constituted an abuse.

Fraud: Orosanye returns to EFCC today

0

Former Head of Service of the Federation, HOSF, Mr. Steve Oronsaye, yesterday, returned to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC’s custody ahead of possible arraignment.

Oronsaye was arrested and detained by operatives of the anti-graft agency, Wednesday, but released late night and asked to turn in himself, yesterday.
Vanguard learnt that Oronsaye was, however, asked to go home at about 6p.m., yesterday, and asked to report back to the commission today.
A top official in the commission confirmed to Vanguard that the former top civil servant had been taken in, yesterday, and that every indication pointed to the fact that he would be formally charged before an Abuja Federal High Court.
The official said: “Yes, Mr. Oronsaye is with our operatives preparatory to his arraignment. He was allowed to go yesterday after spending a long time and making useful statement to us. He was ordered to return to our investigators today and he reported around 10a.m. today (yesterday)”
It was not clear if he would be arraigned today or not.
Vanguard learnt that apart from being associated with the mismanagement of huge pensions funds, Oronsaye is being investigated over allegations by top Federal Government officials that he used his position as the chairman of the Presidential Standing Committee on Financial Action Taskforce to fleece the government.

The anti-graft agency source said: “Oronsaye is also being interrogated on fresh allegations of monumental fraud and embezzlement of funds in the running of a Presidential Standing Committee on Financial Action Taskforce, which he chairs.
“The committee is a policy advisory body to the President on the implementation of the AML/CFT. Oronsaye allegedly used it as a conduit to siphon and launder money.
“This fresh lead is triggered by allegations by some members of the committee who claim that Oronsaye operated an illegal account in a first generation bank in the committee’s name without the knowledge of the members through which he has laundered hundreds of millions of naira.”
The renowned bureaucrat has earlier been questioned in relation to the September 2014 damning 169-page report by the office of the Auditor General of the Federation claiming that Oronsaye mismanaged over N123 billion during his tenure as HoSF.
The report, entitled “Special Audit of the Accounts of the Civil Pensions,” found Mr. Oronsaye guilty of allegedly presiding over the looting of the nation’s resources during his tenure.
