Police arraign man for allegedly stealing N25m

A man, Adegboyega Rabiu, has  been arraigned  by the Lagos State Police Command before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing the sum of N25 million from one Lanre Ayedun in the Ikorodu area of the state.

Rabiu, aged  50, was slammed with a tw0-count charge of receiving money by false pretence and stealing. He was brought before arraigned before Patrick Nwaka, as the presiding magistrate.

He was alleged to have told Ayedun  that he was  as an official of the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority who could help him get approval for a  hotel which he wanted to construct in Ikorodu.  But after Ayedun paid 25m to him, the defendant could not be reached. He was also alleged not have made the permit available.

According to the police prosecutor,  Thomas Nurudeen,  Rabiu committed the  alleged crime on August 1, 2023. He told the court that the offences contravened and and were punishable under Sections 411, and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.

The charges against the defendant read: “That you, Adegboyega Rabiu and others now at large on August 1, 2023, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District did commit felony to wit: obtaining money by false pretence and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.

“That you, Adegboyega Rabiu and others now at large on August 1, 2023, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District did steal the sum of N25m under the pretence of getting building approval and permit for one Lanre Ayedun a representation you knew to be false and thereby committed and an offence punishable under Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.”

But he pleaded not guilty to them.  Nwaka, thereafter,  admitted him to bail in the sum of N2m with two responsible sureties in like sum before  adjourning the matter till January 1, 2024.
