PRESS RELEASE
INTERROGATING THE QUESTIONS SURROUNDING THE UROMI KILLINGS
Issued by: NBA Ikeja Law Reform and Policies Review Committee
Date: April 3, 2025

The Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, through its Law Reform and Policies Review Committee, has issued a strong statement interrogating the recent extrajudicial killings in Uromi, Edo State. The statement, signed by Tesleem Adewuyi Esq., the Committee Chairman, and Adeniyi Quadri Esq., the Branch Chairman, describes the incident as a grave violation of human rights and a troubling reminder of the urgent need for accountability and reform in Nigeria’s law enforcement practices.
The Committee asserted that the focus should not rest solely on the identities of the deceased—whether hunters or alleged criminals—but on the broader implications of jungle justice, which has no place in a lawful society. The Committee cited judicial authorities, such as Omah v. The State (2017) LPELR – 42745 CA, affirming that acts committed by multiple persons in pursuit of a common criminal intention render all equally liable, reinforcing the legal rejection of mob or vigilante justice.
