House has urged the House Committee on Petitions to give them fair hearing.
“This house has adjourned sine die because the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has served us notice of their indefinite strike. So, no further sitting can hold.”
Hon. Ehie also pledged to uphold the independence of the legislature and ensure mutual respect for the judiciary and executive arms of government.
Meanwhile, Chief Edwin Clark, former Minister of Information and the Leader of Pan Nigeria Delta Forum, PANDEF has expressed worry over the crisis in Rivers.
In a statement on Monday, Clark said in the last 24 hours he has been reliably informed that there is a plot to unlawfully remove the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalaye Fubara, who has spent only about 5 months in office.
“I understand the sad episode is being orchestrated by the immediate past Governor of Rivers State and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike. And that the intention is to remove the Governor, force his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu to resign, and install the Speaker of the House of Assembly, another Ikwerre person as the governor of the State.
He strongly warns Wike that the Pan Niger Delta group will not allow that to happen.
“Let me warn strongly, we won’t allow that to happen!”
Clark urged President Bola Tinubu to call Nyesom Wike and the security agencies in Rivers State to order, to avert any untold crisis in Rivers State.
He recalled that the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly was burnt on Sunday evening in what apparently was part of the plot to destabilize the State.
“The Governor was tear-gassed and was even threatened with being shot at when he visited the Assembly Complex after the incident, to assess the level of damage”.
Clark points out that Rivers people have suffered enough political crises, the state should not be allowed to degenerate again into its dark past, and the Niger Delta Region by extension. The consequences would be dire for the stability of the region and the National Economy.
“What has Governor Fubara done wrong? Refusing to be further “remote controlled”?
“Mr. Nyesom Wike was Governor for 8 years, nobody harassed him. He governed Rivers State like an Emperor, he did not show any iota of respect and regard to anyone, not even those who imposed him on Rivers people in 2015.
“President Tinubu must act fast and avert the unfolding crisis in Rivers State in the interest of his administration, the nation’s democracy, and the country at large. A word is enough for the wise”.
Also in his reaction, the Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter and South-South zone, Ihunwo Chijioke, congratulated Edison on his emergence as the new Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, urging him to give his best in providing leadership.
In a Statement signed by Dr. Amadi Eze, the Senior Special Assistant to the Chairman for Media and Publicity says”The Chairman rejoices with the Speaker for his maturity and stability in handling legislative matters over the years and the significant role he played in stimulating discussions on the floor of the house.
“The number one youth leader in Rivers State believes the Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison will further improve the relationship between the Legislature and the Executive, and provide more opportunities for the growth of Rivers youths.
The apex youth leader wishes the speaker the very best on the new assignment”.
Meanwhile, The Rivers State Police Command has assured that it is on top of the security situation and was aware of the occurrence at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex.
A statement signed by SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said “Consequently, full-scale investigation has been launched to unravel the circumstances surrounding the situations and take immediate policing actions against anyone found wanting. Further development will be communicated, please”.
