The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Samuel Osorochi Nwanosike, has banned the operation of commercial tricycles, popularly called “Keke Napep”, with immediate effect across the council area.
Ikwerre local government is neighbour to Port Harcourt City council and formed part of the sprawling capital of Rivers State.
The ban was announced in a press statement signed by Chris Omodu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman on Tuesday.
Nwanosike said the ban was a sequel to the security reports made available to the local government.
He added that the ban cuts across all the communities of Ikwerre Local Government.
The local government chairman therefore asked security agents within the LGA to apprehend and prosecute any defaulter according to the law.
The Ikwerre Council Chairman explained that the ban is not targeted at anybody or intended to cause hardship to families of the operators and members of the public who make use of the services of teh tricycle operators.
Recall that Dr. Nwanosike had on 5th June, 2023, banned the operations of motorcycles in Ikwerre LGA within the hours of 7 pm to 6 am as a means of curtailing widespread cult activities within the neighbouring local government areas.
Analysts said the ban on commercial motorcycles has helped to curtail insecurity in the area.
