Mohamed Salah scored a brace as Liverpool opened a three-point gap at the top of the premier league on Monday after thrashing Newcastle United 4-2 at the Anfield Stadium.
After a goalless first half, Liverpool drew the first blood shortly after the restart. Darwin Nunez played a lovely pass into the box and found Mohamed Salah. He tried his luck from close range and coolly struck the ball into the back of the net.
The Egyptian had earlier missed a penalty in the first half but compensated with the goal.
Five minutes later, Newcastle equalised. Alexander Isak received a killer pass, found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and coolly sent the ball into the back of the net.
Liverpool went ahead again after Diogo Jota put the ball across the area and Curtis Jones had the easiest task in the world to tuck the ball into an empty net.
It was 3-1 for Liverpool in the 78th minute of the match. Salah put a cross into the box and found Cody Gakpo, who latched on to it and struck the ball into the bottom right corner.
Newcastle pulled one back three minutes later to make it 3-2. Sean Longstaff sent a fantastic cross into the box from the corner. Sven Botman jumped highest and planted a header down inside the left post.
Salah then made it 4-2 for Liverpool from the penalty spot. He drove the ball low into the left of the net, giving goalkeeper Martin Dubravka no chance
